«The New York Daily News», or simply the Daily News, was founded in 1919 by the co-founders of «
Chicago Tribune» and was first published under the title of the Illustrated Daily News. The prototype for the new edition was the British «
Daily Mirror». «The New York Daily News» is the first Tabloid-style publication in the United States. The newspaper was mainly aimed at ordinary workers and published on its pages a tape of New York City events in a brief and interesting presentation. The publication was not in great demand and only a convenient and compact format saved it from bankruptcy — it gained popularity among distributors and readers in the New York City subway.
In 1948, the newspaper owner launched his own TV channel, WPIX, which was named after the first letters of «The New York's Picture Newspaper»; and later the radio station WPIX-FM was founded. This provided additional income for the newspaper's continued development. In 1976, the New York Daily News had a competitor, «
New York Post», which had not previously published tabloid news, but was bought out by Rupert Murdoch and turned into a sensational tabloid like similar British publications. Today, both of these newspapers have approximately the same number of readers.
Almost from the very beginning, the newspaper was published with the slogan «New York's Picture Newspaper». The publication has always relied on photojournalism and the predominance of original photographic material, mainly obtained by a half-hidden camera from the paparazzi. In 1985, the slogan of the publication was changed to «New York's Hometown Newspaper». The newspaper continued to introduce readers to the main urban events of the Big Apple: the news feed was diluted with criminal reports and analysis of incidents, a selection of all sorts of rumors and sensations, sports news, announcements.
Today, «The New York Daily News» is one of the ten most widely circulated newspapers in the United States, and despite its tendency to sensationalism, it has 11 Pulitzer Prizes to its credit. The newspaper also publishes official reports and notices: sales, tenders, obituaries, etc. According to surveys, this newspaper is more popular with women than men. Each issue of the newspaper has approximately 40 pages, some of the news is delivered by the readers themselves.
