«The Observer» was first published in 1791 on a every Sunday. The new British print edition became the world's first weekend newspaper (weekend newspaper). The newspaper published an independent review of events in the country. In the early 1800s, the newspaper ran into financial problems and received subsidies from the state, which affected the subject matter of publications not for the better. Since the 1850s, «the Observer» has become more liberal, allowing itself to criticize the authorities on certain issues, while at the same time supporting parliamentary reforms. Throughout its history, «The Observer» has repeatedly changed hands, been sold and bought.
«The Observer» flourished in the twentieth century after it was bought by the newspaper magnate of the time, Lord Northcliffe. Northliff quickly turned the publication into a significant body of political influence. The regular circulation of the newspaper jumped 10 times — up to 40 thousand copies, and in the 1930s it increased another 5 times.
Today, the British «Observer» is considered the oldest Sunday newspaper in the world. In 1993, the publication was acquired by the Guardian Media Group Limited, which publishes another popular British newspaper, «
The Guardian». The two newspapers share a similar political stance and regularly exchange articles and materials. Periodically, various free supplements dedicated to sports, music, cooking, and science are published for «The Observer»: Observer Magazine, Observer Sport Monthly, Observer Music Monthly, Observer Woman, and Observer Food Monthly.
«The Observer» newspaper has repeatedly won in various categories and received awards and prizes in the field of journalism (Interview of the Year, Regular Section of the Year, etc.). In 2007, The Observer was named National Newspaper of the Year by the British Press Awards (National Newspaper of the Year award from the British Press Awards"). In 2014, the popular science section «Observer Tech Monthly» of the newspaper won a special nomination «Grand Prix Newspaper Awards».
On the official website of the newspaper, digital archives of most of «The Observer's» issues from 1791 to 2003 are available, which is almost 300,000 thousand microfilmed pages. In 2005, the website launched the author's blog «The Observer Blog» with analysis of past events and podcasts.
Since 2017, the British «Observer» is one of the main information sponsors of the «Brexit Convention» (The Convention on Brexit).
