«The Manchester Guardian» is a British daily newspaper founded in 1821 in the city of Manchester by a group of businessmen called «The Manchester Guardian». The prototype for the new newspaper was the then-closed «Manchester Observer» newspaper, which defended the interests of workers. Initially, the newspaper was weekly, it was published once a week, on Saturday.
The newspaper quickly gained interest from local readers and earned the humorous nickname «The Grauniad». The first issues of the newspaper contained many typographical errors related to the imperfection of printing techniques and methods of typing letters: some letters in the text were of different sizes and shapes, some of them were mixed up in places, others were completely absent. This feature of the newspaper became its hallmark for many years, but was then forgotten.
Since 1835, the newspaper has been published twice a week, and since 1855 — daily. In 1959, the newspaper was renamed to the modern, abbreviated, «The Guardian». Since 1964, the newspaper's editorial office has been located in the capital of Great Britain, London. Until 1970, the newspaper was not very popular with readers and could not compete with other publications in the capital, it published little advertising and the publisher could not afford large circulations. The subsequent reorganization of the newspaper and its redesign, as well as competent marketing campaigns, changed this situation for the better. The newspaper is currently owned by the Guardian Media Group.
In terms of its content, the Guardian newspaper is a leader among the few British publications that offer really high-quality and author's material. The modern Guardian is considered one of the most widely read, prestigious and influential British publications and is positioned as «The world's leading liberal voice». It is also available in Australia and the United States as an international edition.
Since 2018, the newspaper has been published in the recently popular reduced Tabloid format, which was done to reduce costs. Changing the format also allowed us to increase the number of its pages and sections.
Since the mid-1990s, «The Guardian» has received various awards every year: National Newspaper of the Year (1998, 2005, 2010, 2013), Journalist of the Year (1999, 2009, 2013), Home Page Of the Year (2002), Website of the Year (1999, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2015), Newspaper with Best Design (2006), Bevins Prize, Eppy Award and others.
«The Guardian» itself is a sponsor of various awards: The Guardian First Book Award, Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, The annual Guardian Student Media Awards, Paul Foot Award. The newspaper sponsors the annual Hay Festival event.
«The Guardian» regularly compiles and publishes various ratings («100 Best»): The Guardian 100 Best Footballers In The World, The Guardian's 100 best novels, The Guardian's 100 greatest non-fiction book, and others.
«The Guardian's» online archive, which includes more than one million microfilmed and digitized pages for the period 1821-2003, is available on the newspaper's website. The website itself was registered in mid-1994, becoming one of the first news resources on the Internet.
«The Guardian» is considered an important newspaper brand in the UK. In 2008, the newspaper's publishing house opened The Newsroom in London, an interactive publication museum that includes a permanent exhibition and archive. Currently, The Guardian News & Media Archive contains an extensive collection of «The Guardian» and «
The Observer» newspapers, various documents, diaries and records in print, microfilm and electronic formats. On its basis, the Guardian's Education Center was created. In 2003, the newspaper's publisher founded GuardianFilms, a media production company that makes documentaries and educational videos.
