«Vijenac» is a Croatian magazine about literature, poetry, art, creativity and science, published since 1993 twice a month by the editorial board of «Matica hrvatska», the Central State Institute of Culture of Croatia. Translated into English, its name means «Wreath».
«Vijenac» is a follower of the eponymous literary magazine «Vienac», which was very popular in the second half of the XIX century. It was founded in 1869 and quickly became Croatia's main literary magazine, a prestigious destination for publications by local authors and translations of foreign literature. Such famous personalities of their time as August Senoa, Viakoslav Klajc, Djuro Dezelic, Ivan Perkovac, Milivoj Dezman, Josip Pasaric, Franjo Markovic worked here. The magazine was published by the editorial board of Matica ilirska, the largest publishing house in Croatia, established in 1942 to preserve and promote national culture, history, and science. In 1874, the publishing house was renamed «Matica hrvatska». In 1903, the magazine closed for financial reasons. In the future, several unsuccessful attempts were made to restart it.
After 90 years, the magazine finally returned to the Croatian periodical market, and today it continues to be published in the best traditions. Its pages feature lively discussions on current trends in art, literature, poetry, science, architecture and construction, as well as in society as a whole. It publishes and analyzes the best works of contemporary authors, publishes analytical articles and critical notes. The main sections of the magazine are: Naglasak (meetings, interviews), Razgovor (discussions), Aktualno (current topics), Drustvo (society), Feljton (feuilletons), Kolumne (editor's column), Knjizevnost (literature review), Poezija (poetry), Kazaliste (theater), Likovna umjetnost (art), Glazba (music), Film (movies, movies). In 1998, due to disagreements with the management, most of the editorial staff of «Vijenac» separated from the magazine and founded its own similar publication, «
Zarez», which continues its previous traditions.
