This British newspaper was founded in 1785 in London under the name «The Daily Universal Register» (The Daily List of News). In 1788, it was renamed «The Times» and bears this name to this day. This is the first newspaper in the world to use the word «Time» in its name. An innovative and progressive newspaper — since its foundation, it has always kept up with the times and applied in its work all the achievements of modern technologies for layout, printing, distribution and advertising.
«The Times» was the first newspaper to send its correspondents around the world to cover military conflicts, thus becoming a pioneer of military journalism. During the American Civil War, «the Times» presented the views of the rich classes, but at the same time advocated the abolition of slavery. Throughout the 19th century, the British Foreign Office regularly turned to the «Times» for help in obtaining this or that information. In the 1930s, the newspaper advocated the pacification of Germany. For a long time, The Times has kept its print traditions unchanged.
With the acquisition of «The Times» by Rupert Murdoch in the 1980s, a new phase began for the newspaper, which was marked by another introduction of new technologies and measures to improve the efficiency of the publication. The traditional lettered linotype typesetting process of publishing, which was used since the 19th century, was gradually replaced by computer text input and photo composition. This reduced the number of employees and printing costs by half. In June 1990, the Times discontinued its policy of using polite names (prefixes «Mr.», «Mrs.», «Miss»). Since 2008, it has been printed in full color.
For more than a century, «the Times» newspaper has held a leading position in the information and political sphere of the United Kingdom, and all this time it simply did not have worthy competitors. This is even more than just a newspaper and a source of reliable information, it is a real UK brand that has passed the test of time. The newspaper's name has repeatedly appeared in literature, movies, and TV. The newspaper itself is also the creator of various brands and traditions. For example, the popular computer print font «Times New Roman» was created in the 1930s by the company «Monotype» at the request of the newspaper «The Times» and for a long time it was used as the main one.
The electronic version of the newspaper has been available since 1999. «The Times» is an informational sponsor of the London Film Festival. The newspaper has a Sunday version, the weekly «
The Sunday Times», which until 1966 was an independent publication.
