«The Economist» is a weekly British socio-political and business magazine focusing on free trade, globalization, and immigration, and a characteristic representative of classical economic and cultural liberalism. It is aimed at a well-educated, highly cultured English-speaking audience familiar with economic terms and principles of trade, including representatives of the executive branch, politicians, economists, bankers, and businessmen. The magazine is published in a huge weekly circulation of more than 1.5 million copies, more than half of the total circulation is traditionally distributed in the United States.
«The Economist» was founded by British businessman and banker James Wilson in 1843 with the aim of influencing the existing legislative system of Britain at that time. The publication quickly turned into a classic business and financial newspaper: discussion of the practical application of laws, parliamentary reports, regional news, technologies and their application, agriculture, various analytics... For a long time, the Economist was described by American analysts as «the most competent Western public publication». Karl Marx used the magazine as the main source of information for the formation of his ideas of socialism.
«The Economist» pays a lot of attention to global financial news, politics and business, science and technology, literature and art. The publication is also known for its regular reports and summaries. The style of presentation of articles is quite strict and concise, as well as traditionally anonymous — the authorship of materials in most cases is not indicated.
«The Economist» is also known as the creator of the Big Mac Index, which was first used in 1986. This index or coefficient uses the price of a hamburger from a popular American fast food chain in different capitalist countries( where this chain has representative offices) to estimate the purchasing power of currencies.
In countries with authoritarian regimes, this magazine is often banned by censorship.
