«The Peninsula» is Qatar's second most popular English-language newspaper, targeting a foreign audience. It has been published since 1996 by the editorial board of «
الشرق» (Al Sharq). Translated into English, the newspaper's name means «Peninsula». It was created to compete with another English-language newspaper, the «
Gulf Times», and is aimed at the well-educated middle class and professional businessmen, economists, diplomats, and tourists. The newspaper has approximately 25-35 pages and many sections, it covers almost all topics: News from Qatar and the Middle East, a brief overview of international events, a section of Financial, Economic and Business, Sports, Entertainment, Lifestyle, city bulletin, career, tourism, various analytics and editorial columns. The newspaper's slogan is «Local focus, Global vision». Newspaper supplements: «Doha Today» (daily tabloid-style newspaper about life in Doha), «The Peninsula Plus» (weekly mag), Penmag (announcements). In 2017, the publication's website took the third place in the ranking of «Best News Websites in the Middle East». The newspaper gained special significance after Qatar was chosen as the capital of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
