The Montenegrin newspaper «Vijesti» is positioned as an «independent diary focused on European values». The editorial office of the newspaper «Vijesti» is managed by the collective of «Daily Press d.o.o.», a limited liability company based in Podgorica. The publication is owned by: private investors and entrepreneurs of Montenegro (59%), Austrian «Styria Medien AG» (25%), and the independent American fund «MDIF» (16%), also consisting of investors and various organizations, including Soros' Open Society Foundations. The editorial line of the newspaper is close to the centrist one, mainly due to the influence of foreign investors.

The newspaper «Vijesti» started its publication in 1997 on the eve of the presidential elections, thus becoming the second daily newspaper in Montenegro after the state-owned «Pobjeda». Montenegro was then part of Yugoslavia, the election struggle was between Milosevic and Djukanovic, the newspaper actively supported the latter, since his election campaign coincided with the position of the editorial board (or its pro-Western sponsors) on Montenegro's desire for independence. After Milo Djukanovic's election victory, the newspaper focused on providing information support to the new government, often criticizing its actions for not being sufficiently active. Since 2006, «Vijesti's» editorial policy has become more independent and less politicized. In 2008, the TV channel «Televizija Vijesti» was launched.
