«Marie Claire» — is a popular monthly women's magazine about fashion, beauty, and style in France. Today it is published in more than 35 countries on 5 continents in local editorial offices. Each version of the magazine has a different content, and local editors adapt to each audience. The largest international editorial offices of Marie Claire are the American one (since 1994 and today its circulation is 969 thousand copies, published by Hearst) and the British TI Media (since 1988, 227 thousand copies).
The creator of the magazine in 1937 was Jean Prouvot, according to his idea, it was supposed to be published every Wednesday and give the fair sex of France a detailed overview of the fashion industry. The name of the magazine comes from the popular novel of the same name by Marguerite Audoux — «Marie-Claire». With the beginning of the German occupation in 1942, the publication of the magazine was suspended, and the next time it will appear on the French press market only in 1954 as a monthly. In 1976, Jean Prouvot handed over the management of the magazine to his daughter Evelyn, and from that moment the magazine began to cooperate with the cosmetics company L'Oréal.
The main readership of «Marie Claire» consists of young people (up to 30 years old), who have an average income and live in large cities. The main competitor of the magazine is «
Elle», but its readers belong to the older and better-off category, as well as «
Madame Figaro».
