«La Nacion» (The Nation) is the daily national newspaper of Chile, published in Santiago since 1917. The newspaper has always paid considerable attention to national politics and social problems, fought for the rights of workers and relied on the economic development of the country. In 1927, during the dictatorial regime of Carlos Campo, the newspaper was confiscated and turned into an official propaganda media outlet. From this point on, it is largely under the influence of the state.

In 1973, the newspaper was taken over by the Chilean Armed Forces, which first renamed it «La Patria» (Homeland), and in 1975 — «El Cronista» (Chronicler). In June 1980, the newspaper was returned to its original name «La Nación». Then the newspaper represented the interests of the August Pinochet regime, published official statements and notices, propaganda materials, news passed through a strict censorship filter.

In the 1990s, it was already a center-left newspaper, focusing on politics and denouncing former military regimes. Today, it adheres to a neutral line and is 70 percent state-owned. The newspaper's slogan is «Sin La Nación, la nación no sería la misma» (Without «La Nación», the nation would not be the same). Compared to other national newspapers of Chile, it has a small circulation, barely reaching 15 thousand copies, which is distributed in state institutions, consulates, diplomatic missions, exhibitions.
