Translated into English, its name means «South». The newspaper was founded in 1882 by lawyer and radical politician Juan Castellon Larenas. It was an opposition newspaper that criticized the official government of Jose Manuel Balmacedo. Until 1904, the newspaper maintained close ties with the Chilean radical party Partido Radical, and then became independent. In 1960, during the so-called Valdivian earthquake (the strongest earthquake in history), the newspaper continued to publish and inform the population about the situation in the country, for which it later received the «SIP-Mergenthaler» award from the Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa. In 1982, a commemorative stamp was issued for the 100th anniversary of the publication of this newspaper, and the editorial board celebrated this event with a voluminous 96-page issue with the results of the century. Since 2006, the newspaper has been owned by the media company «El Mercurio S. A. P.».
