«El Siglo» — is a Chilean communist periodical in Spanish, the official information organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Chile (Partido Comunista de Chile), published in Santiago since August 31, 1940. Since July 14, 1948, it has been banned by the current government and for most of its history has been published clandestinely and irregularly in the format of a bulletin or newspaper. Since 1989, it has been published officially as a weekly magazine. The publication's motto is «El primer activista de la revolución chilena» (An exemplary activist of the Chilean Revolution). In Spanish, the name «El Siglo» means «Century». The journal is available for free sale and by subscription, as well as in electronic form.
For its first 50 years, the newspaper existed mainly due to financial assistance from the communist regimes of a number of European countries, and its main sponsor was, of course, the USSR. After the collapse of the latter, the publication lost its relevance and was forced to refocus on a new audience, new values (right-wing) and new sources of funding: paid subscriptions, advertising. Traditionally, for communist publications, Sikhlo pays a lot of attention to social problems, protection and respect for human rights, culture, morality, science, and sports; politics is relegated to the background and is mainly offered in a critical view.
