«Métro», also known as «Métro Montréal» and «Journal Métro», is a free advertising and informational daily newspaper in Canada in French, published since March 2001 under the license of Metro International. The newspaper is distributed free of charge in the subway Montreal in the morning hours through special newspaper stands at the entrance and stations, in the passages. The other part of the circulation is distributed to bus stops and bus stations of the STM transport company. The third and smallest part of the circulation is distributed in the places of stay of foreigners and tourists: exhibitions, hotels, restaurants, museums. In other cities of Canada, this newspaper is also available, but in English: Toronto (2000), Vancouver and Ottawa (2005), Calgary and Edmonton (2007), Halifax (2008).
The newspaper's content is aimed at the average Canadian citizen who uses public transport. The content in the newspaper is optimized for fast reading on the road - short news notes on current topics of the day with a lot of photos, interesting articles. The first few pages are devoted to urban events in Montreal and Canadian news, followed by reviews of social, cultural, and sporting events, as well as periodic sections on fashion, beauty, literature, and so on. A significant part of the newspaper's content consists of advertising articles (about health, technological innovations), on the last pages the reader will find weather forecasts, currency exchange rates, announcements, entertainment materials such as horoscopes, crossword puzzles.
In 2010, the editorial board was unable to renew the franchise and lost the right to publish this newspaper in the Montreal metro, for the next 5 years, the main free advertising newspaper here was «
24 Heures» of the company «Quebecor Media». In 2016, the newspaper «Métro Montréal» returned to the metro racks, but only for 2 years. In 2018, the right to use the Metro brand in Canada was transferred to the «Torstar Group» («
Toronto Star»), which has published the English-language Metro in Canada since 2000. The newspaper became known as «
StarMetro» from that moment on. The Montreal French-language version of Metro has been retained and continues to be published.
