«Washington Square News», a weekly or student newspaper of New York University (NYU), the largest private scientific and educational institution in the United States, located in the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan. The newspaper is also considered a regional publication of the West Village area. It is positioned in the American press market as the «New York Independent Student Newspaper». This periodical, better known as «WSN», is published by the University's student collective every Monday with a circulation of 10,000 copies. It can be published more frequently during exams and less frequently during vacations. The electronic version of the newspaper is updated every weekday. The publication is distributed on university campuses in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, as well as in other educational institutions, libraries, and educational centers (in total, the newspaper has more than 100 distribution points). The Washington Square News is considered a politically and economically independent newspaper and has its own investment fund. Some issues of the newspaper are distributed free of charge, the rest - by paid subscription, the main subscribers of the newspaper are educational institutions.

The weekly was first published in 1973 as a result of the merger of two university campuses and their newspapers. Prior to this, the university did not have a single newspaper, each campus (and the university had two) published its own publication: «The Heights Daily News» (published by the University Heights campus in the Bronx), «The Washington Square Journal» (published by the Washington Square campus in Lower Manhattan). The newspaper has received several awards for excellence in journalism: first place in the «Best Article» category from the New York Press Association (2009), National Winner in the «Journalism» category from the Association of Professional Journalists, «Best Newspaper» (2004), and others.

The newspaper tries to cover topics that may interest young people, and mainly these are: educational news, university news, articles about culture, history, art, fashion trends, sports, science and technology, official news and programs of the University, Village news, discussion club and much more.
