«The New Yorker» — is an American weekly magazine focused on the cultural and literary life of New York: reports, interviews, author's articles, comments and notes; event reviews, reviews and criticism; literature, poetry, satire, essays; cartoons, satire, humor. The New Yorker was founded in 1925 by Harold Ross, a journalist for «The New York Times», as a satirical magazine (fifteen-cent comic paper), but almost immediately became an authoritative club for publishing contemporary writers (detective stories, short stories, essays, poetry) and discussing literature. Such famous authors of the 20th century as Alice Munro, Vladimir Nabokov, J. D. Salinger, James Thurber, Jeffrey Hellman, Joseph Mitchell, John Updike, John McNulty, John O'Hara, John Cheever, Dorothy Parker, Irwin Shaw, Mavis Gallant, Roald Dahl, Ruth McKenney, Sally Benson, Stephen King, Truman Capote, Philip Roth, Haruki Murakami, E. B. White, Ann Beatty, Eudora Welty. For many of them, publication in this magazine was a debut and a trip to life. The magazine is also known for its cartoons, and has always featured the best cartoonists in the country. «The New Yorker» has effectively set a new standard for this type of publication. Magazine awards: Pulitzer Prize (6 times), George Polk Award (1979), National Magazine Award for General Excellence (1995). The magazine has so entered the history of American periodicals that it is even mentioned in many literary works. Its name in English means «New York citizen».
