«Newsweek» — an authoritative American news magazine-weekly in English, the most widely distributed publication in the XX century among similar ones. The second-largest news weekly in America after Time, in its best years, was published in 4 versions in English and in 12-in the main European languages for distribution in other countries.
The magazine was founded in 1933 by Thomas Martin, one of the editors of another popular publication, «
Time», together with a group of investors. The first edition of the magazine took place on February 17, 1933. In terms of the format and style of presentation of the material, it was practically a copy of «Time». Traditionally, the publication had a lot of photos and high-quality journalistic materials, while the emphasis was placed on national news. In 1937, the publication bought out another weekly «Today», which provided the publishing house with a stable existence for many years. At that moment, the foundations of the modern «Newsweek» were laid, its design and journalistic styles, its structure, and it reached an international level.
In 1961, the magazine was acquired by «The Washington Post Company» and was under its control until 2010. It was under the leadership of this company that the magazine lived its best years and gained worldwide fame. Like most other print periodicals, the magazine faced financial difficulties in the new digital age, when most of the information moved to the Internet, and in 2012 its print version was replaced by a completely electronic edition. Then, in 2014-2018, it was again published in print form with a new management under the control of IBT Media. Since 2018, the magazine has become independent and today belongs to private individuals, continues to be published in print and digital forms, although on a more modest scale. Its main print editions are now published for the United States, Japan, Pakistan, Poland, and Romania. Its electronic version is available in English, Korean, Polish, Romanian, and Japanese. The main sections of the magazine are: USA, World, Business, Science and Technology, Culture, Sports, Health, Opinions.
