In May 1910, a new Spanish newspaper, «El Pueblo Vasco» (The Basque People), was founded in Bilbao. The editorial line of the newspaper was Catholic, conservative and independent, aimed at supporting the Baku Autonomy and the Liberal-Conservative Party.
In July 1936, shortly before the Spanish Civil War, the newspaper was shut down by the Spanish Republican Government. But just a year later it was published again, this time in conjunction with El Correo Español (Spanish Courier), the official party newspaper FET y de las JONS. For the next 15 years, it will be published under the name «El Correo Español-El Pueblo Vasco», its main competitors will be «El Noticiero Bilbaíno» (1939) and «
El Diario Vasco» (1945).
In 1976, El Correo became the best-selling newspaper in northern Spain. From 1955 to 1978, El Correo was the main information sponsor of the Spanish cycling race La Vuelta (Vuelta).
The publication was primarily focused on the Basque Country region, but in the 1980s the newspaper expanded beyond Bilbao and today it is published in 9 versions: Biscay and Bilbao (5 editions), Alava, Burgos, Gupuzkoa, Rioja. Since 2014, it has also been published in the UAE. One of the most recognizable features of the newspaper is its satirical comics «Don Celes». «El Correo» is included in the list of the most widely circulated Spanish newspapers and takes the 7th place in it.
In 2012, El Correo was named «Newspaper of the Year» by the European Newspaper Congress in the category of regional publications.
