The newspaper «Diario As» was created the following year after the publication in Spain of the updated Press Law of 1966, which gave private newspapers more freedom. The newspaper was supposed to be a direct competitor to another national sports and more censored publication, «
Marca». It was created on the basis of the editorial office of the newspaper «Semanario Gráfico» (Illustrated Weekly), which was published in Spain from 1932 to 1936. The new newspaper was named «Diario As», which means «Diary of an Ace» in English. The first issue of the newspaper was published on December 6, 1967, it was dedicated to tennis player Manuel Santana and boxer «Sombrita». The newspaper developed rapidly, and among its readers it was better known simply as «AS». In the 1990s, As became Spain's first color newspaper and the second best-selling Spanish sports newspaper in general.
The newspaper «As» is traditionally focused on football topics, which in the publication is allocated about half of the total print space. The first pages of the newspaper are usually given to Real Madrid, the next-to local football teams, depending on the regional publication. The section ends with reviews of the European Premier League, Second Division and international football events.
The second significant section of the newspaper is «More Motor», dedicated to motorsport and motorsport. It offers the reader a detailed overview of Moto GP, Formula 1 and Rally events, as well as Endurance series races. Other sports are included in the last section «More sport» (athletics, tennis, cycling and others). Depending on the season, the volume, subject matter, and content of sections may change.
Traditionally, a newspaper's back cover features photos of female athletes or sports-related models. The publication is always present at major sporting events in Spain as an informational sponsor. On the website, you can find international versions of the publication for each of the Spanish-speaking countries, the main ones being Spain (AS España) and America (AS América).
The main distribution of this newspaper is in Madrid, as well as in other major cities of Spain: Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia, Zaragoza and Seville. The electronic version of the newspaper is also available in English (AS English) since 2012, and there are regional sections for other Spanish-speaking countries: Argentina (AS Argentina), Colombia (AS Colombia), Mexico (AS Mexico), Peru (AS Perú), USA (AS USA), Chile (AS Chile).
