«ABC Color» is probably the most famous and widely distributed daily newspaper in Paraguay, a true newspaper brand of the country. Its name can be translated into English literally as «Color Alphabet» (Colored Letters). The newspaper has been published in color since its foundation, and this is reflected in its name. The newspaper was founded on August 8, 1967, and from the very first day it was distributed throughout the country, without concentrating only on a particular city or region (it was created immediately as a «national» newspaper). In its early years, it was distinguished by loyalty and even support for the dictatorial regime of Alfredo Stroessner, but then it became more critical, even in opposition to the regime, for which it was closed in 1984. It returned to publishing only after the fall of the regime, and regained its former popularity in the early 1990s. Since its main competitor, the newspaper La Tribuna, left the market in 1983, it quickly became a leader. In 1996, it went online, one of the first in Paraguay (ABC Digital). Today, the newspaper has its own radio station (ABC Cardinal, ABC FM) and a TV channel (ABC TV). The newspaper employs many influential Paraguayan journalists (Alcibiades González Delvalle, Jesús Ruiz Nestosa, Gustavo Laterza, Ramón Casco Carreras, Edwin Brítez, Ilde Silvero), as well as cartoonists, such as Carlos Sosa, known under the pseudonym «Calo».
The main news section in the newspaper is supplemented by numerous appendices depending on the day of the week: ABC Deportivo (sports), ABC Escolar, Cultural (culture), Economico (economy), Nosotras (nation), Estudiantil (education), Salud (health), Mujer (women's magazine), ABC Rural (province, rural agriculture), Casa y Jardín (discussions, answers to questions), Weekend (entertainment), Mundo Digital (technology).
