«Sunnmørsposten» has long been a business of the Flem family, which also owned the newspaper. In 1991, the newspaper was sold to Orkla Media, in 2006 to Mecom Europe, and in 2009 to Polaris Media ASA. Sunnmørsposten has supported the Venstre Liberal Party since its foundation in 1882, but in 1977 it declared its political independence and neutrality. The electronic version of the newspaper has been available since 1997. In 2013, the publisher won the MBL award for the best local online newspaper of the year.
Sunnmørsposten newspaper had many competitors in this region throughout its history: Aalesunds Avis (1917-1957), Aalesunds blad (1871-1895), Aalesunds Handels - og Sjøfartstidende (1857-1904), Aalesunds Socialdemokrat (1908-1910), and Arbeidernes blad (1898), but by 1985 they were virtually gone. The primary distribution of the publication takes place in the region of Sanmer and Aalesund.
Like many other Norwegian newspapers, Sunnmørsposten is published 6 times a week in tabloid format, the traditional issue of the publication consists of 2 parts: local regional news, sports and announcements; culture, weather, opinions and author's pages. The weekend edition is more extensive and contains additional sections.
Sunnmørsposten has received a number of awards at the local, national and international levels for its journalism, various articles and reports, photographic materials, design and its work in the field of computer journalism.
