«The New Straits Times» has been published in Malaysia since 1845, so today it is the oldest operating newspaper in the country. The title originally did not have the prefix «New», it was added in 1974 after the reorganization of the publishing house. The newspaper was published once a week and was printed on a manual printing press in a limited edition. When the newspaper was joined in 1858 by the «Singapore Journal of Commerce», the business journal of Singapore, its name was temporarily changed to «The Daily Times». Since its inception, the newspaper has focused on a strictly defined circle of readers: merchants, business people, bankers, land owners, carriers, travelers, and foreigners. They all had one thing in common — they could read and knew English.
In 1969, newspapers published in Malaysia were banned from being distributed in Singapore, and it was also applied in the opposite direction. It was at that time that the prefix «New» appeared in the name of the newspaper to circumvent this restriction. Both newspapers had similar content but different names: «The New Straits Times» was sold only in Malaysia, and The Straits Times» was sold only in Singapore.
Today, the newspaper's readership has significantly expanded, especially after the newspaper went online. The newspaper has the following sections: News (latest news, incidents, exclusive, national events, regional news, international news), Lifestyle (entertainment section with applications: Bots, Heal, Flair, Jom!, Groove, Sunday Vibes), Sports (sports section, football, badminton, motorcycle racing, tennis, golf), Opinion (editors, readers' letters, reports and analytics), Multimedia (for readers of the electronic version, photos, videos, interactive materials).
