«The Korea Times» — the oldest English-language newspaper in South Korea today, its first issue was published on November 1, 1950, during the outbreak of the Korean War, in fact, for several years it became a messenger from the fields of war. Translated into English, the newspaper's name means «Times of Korea». The founder of the publication was a local politician and activist, Helen Kim, who worked in the Korean Public Information Administration and represented the country at the UN General Assembly. At that time, there were no foreign publications in Korea that would give an objective assessment of the events taking place in the country. In the first few years, the newspaper formed a clear political position-it supported the government of Lee Seung-man, who spoke out with a clear anti-communist line.
In 1988, the newspaper was chosen as the official representative of the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, during which time it published a special version of its publication, «The Seoul Olympian». This event was a landmark for the newspaper itself, which marked the beginning of its transformation into an official information sponsor of important events on the Korean peninsula. In 2005, she represented the APEC Economic Conference and the Busan Film Festival, and in 2007, the Inter-Korean Summit. Since 1970, the newspaper has presented an annual literary prize.
Today, the newspaper is published daily, with the exception of Mondays, is almost an English-language copy of the Korean newspaper «
한국일보 (Hankook Ilbo)» , and represents a centrist political line. It pursues the same goals as at the time of its foundation — to present Korea to a foreign audience in an objective way, to explain events and changes in its politics, economy, and the lives of ordinary citizens in a simple and accessible form. The newspaper will be of interest to everyone who is interested in Korea and events on the Korean peninsula.
