«産経新聞» or «Sankei Shimbun» is a conservative Japanese-language daily newspaper, ranked among the top five and most widely circulated newspapers in Japan. Its abbreviated name is usually used, and the full name looks like this: «産業経済新聞» (Sangyō Keizai Shinbun), which literally means «Industrial and Economic News» in English, but since Sankei is the name of the company, it is not translated, it is better known to foreign readers simply as «The Sankei News». Despite its name, it is not a business newspaper and covers a wide range of different topics. Published by the company of the same name. This newspaper has a long history, in fact it was formed as a result of the merger of several local publications, «Jiji News» (1882) and the business newspaper «Nihon kogyō Shimbun» (1933).
«Nihon kogyō Shimbun» was founded in 1933 by Hisakichi Maeda, a business newspaper that specialized in business, financial, and industrial news. In 1941, it was joined by several local publications in the western part of the country. Since then, the newspaper has been called «Sangyō Keizai Shimbun». Jiji News joined the newspaper in the 1950s. In 1952, a woman became its editor-in-chief, which was the first time in Japan. At the same time, the newspaper decided to abandon the business theme and turn the publication into a regular daily newspaper. However, the former name was retained. The newspaper's editorial policy is mostly conservative, with a lot of attention paid to finance, economics, sports, and healthcare. Like most Japanese newspapers, it is published in the morning and evening (the latter is distributed mainly in major cities and the capital). Its main office is located in Tokyo, and two additional offices are located in Osako and Fukuoka.
Today newspaper produces many other publications: «フジサンケイビジネスアイ» (FujiSankei Business) business and industry newspaper, «サンケイスポーツ» (Sankei Sports) national sports newspaper, «夕刊フジ» (Yukan Fuji) Japanese leading evening newspaper, «競馬エイト» (Keiba Eight) sports newspaper of horse racing «大阪新聞» (Osaka Shimbun) regional evening newspaper, «サンケイエクスプレス» (産経エクスプレス) (Sankei Express), a magazine for young people. The affiliated companies of this newspaper are mainly engaged in the telecommunications business and television.
The newspaper's editorial staff is actively involved in the country's life, annually awards various awards (Sankei Award) to active artists, culture, and social workers: «Tomin no Keisatsukan» (best police officer), «Sankei jidou shuppan bunka Shō» (children's Literature Award), «産経国際書展» (calligraphy award), and the «明美ちゃん基金», «Akemi Chan Kikin Charitable Foundation» is organized for it.) to help children with heart malformations.
