«Il Resto del Carlino», the Italian newspaper of the Bologna region, has been published since 1885. The name of the newspaper can be translated as «Received for change from Carlino» (Carlino is an Italian comune in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, Udine province). It is named after the commune where the epidemic first spread. One of the oldest Italian newspapers in Italy. An original marketing idea was borrowed to promote this newspaper.
In 1885, the local newspaper «Il Resto al Sigaro» (The Cigar Change) was popular in Florence, and it was sold at tobacco kiosks for 2 cents. At that time, in Italy, most inexpensive cigars were sold at a fixed price of 8 cents. Thus, the buyer of tobacco products often received the latest issue of the newspaper instead of changing from a dime. A group of students from the Bologna region, future journalists who regularly visited the Tuscan capital, decided to use this idea to promote their newspaper.
As a result, a new newspaper «Il Resto del Carlino» appeared in Bologna, the basis of which was completely copied from «Il Resto al Sigaro» and the size, price, and even the name. It was also distributed mainly in tobacco kiosks, containing brief summaries of interesting city and regional news. The idea of promoting the Tabachnaya gazeta was successful — by 1890, its regular circulation reached 20 thousand copies, the newspaper had regular readers and large advertisers. In the early 1900s, the newspaper collaborated with many prominent Italian personalities, publishing their articles and stories on its pages.
The modern Il Resto del Carlino is owned by the largest Italian publishing companies Monrif and RCS MediaGroup, and is produced by Poligrafici Editoriali. It is available in separate versions for: Ancona, Ascoli, Bologna, Imola, Marche, Macerata, Modena, Pesaro, Ravenna, Reggio nel Emilia, Rome, Rimini, Rovigo, Romagna, Fermo, Ferrara, Forli, Cesena. The largest circulation of the publication was in the 1980s (more than 200 thousand copies daily), then they began to gradually decline. Today the newspaper has a circulation of about 100 thousand copies.
