A weekly sports magazine with name «Nemzeti Sport» was published in Hungary from early 1903s. Due to financial problems, at first it was published irregularly, printed in black and white, in a small format and in a small print run. Despite this, in 1907 it received the title of «Official Magazine of the International Football Association (FIFA)». In 1919, the newspaper changed its name several times: «Image Sport» and «National Sport». Translated into English, «Nemzeti Sport» sounds like «National Sport».
Since 1922, the staff of the magazine is formed in the National Sports Publishing Company «Lapland Publishing Company», from this moment the magazine finds its second birth. Now the magazine is printed daily. Since 1925, the newspaper has been printed on green paper.
From the end of World War II until 1990, the sports newspaper was published under the name «Népsport». In 1990, the publication was restored to its original title and format. In 1999, the publishing company «Ringier» became the owner of the magazine and the entire editorial office. In 2014, as a result of the merger of Ringier and Axel Springer-Budapest Publishing Ltd., Mediaworks Hungary Zrt became the new owner of the newspaper.
The National Sport newspaper covers many popular sports in Hungary: auto-moto, Formula 1, World Rally Championship, tennis, athletics, handball, basketball, water polo, ice hockey and swimming. The newspaper pays special attention to football, both national (NBI, NBII) and European (English football, Spanish football, Italian football, German football, Champions League, Europa League, World Cup). It provides a detailed overview and analysis of all matches, introduces teams (DVSC, DVTK, FTC, Kisvárda, Kaposvár, Honvéd, Mezőkövesd, Puskás Akadémia, Paks, Újpest, ZTE, Videoton) and individual players, discusses transfers, makes forecasts for the upcoming games of the season, all this is flavored with a fair portion of photos.
In 1993, the newspaper won the MOB Media Award. In 2014, the newspaper's website was recognized as the best in Hungary (Website of the Year). In the electronic version, the reader will find blogs of journalists, interviews, videos, interactive services, tables and statistics, collections of materials and an archive.
