«Magyar Nemzet» was founded in 1938 by Hungarian journalists who had previously worked for «Magyarság» magazine and left it after disagreements about its new ideology (the magazine began to support the ideas of national Socialism). The newspaper immediately became the central messenger of opposition to the German occupation of the country, a defender of the unity of the Venetian nation, its history and culture. During the Second World War, «Magyar Nemzet» was banned and returned to the Hungarian press market only in 1945. In the post-war period, the newspaper was published intermittently and irregularly, was subject to censorship and various restrictions. «Magyar Nemzet» has been under the influence of communist ideology for more than 40 years, and the editorial staff was forced to support the official position of the Soviet government. At that time, «Magyar Nemzet» was an intelligentsia newspaper that played an important role in covering foreign policy and cultural news. After the fall of communism, «Magyar Nemzet» served as a leading news outlet in 1988-1998 during the regime change in Hungary.

After the transition to the new capitalist system, «Magyar Nemzet» lost its former ideological significance. The newspaper faced financial difficulties and the need for privatization, and its future strategy remained unclear. In the future, the publication was constantly criticized for its instability and inconsistency in supporting a particular political line. In the mid-90s, «Magyar Nemzet» was more of a publication with a moderately independent political line, it was a cautious critic of modernity, and paid a lot of attention to Hungarian culture and history. In 1997, the newspaper and its editor-in-chief were awarded the Magyar Öökség Díjas (Hungarian Heritage) Award.

In 2000, the publishing house of the «Magyar Nemzet» newspaper merged with «Daily Hungary». In 2010, the newspaper supported the line of the official Hungarian government. In 2015, after the so-called «Hungarian D-Day», the newspaper made a bet on an independent and neutral editorial policy, following the Western traditions of high-quality journalism. However, after the 2018 elections, the «Magyar Nemzet» newspaper in its former form again loses relevance and is now finally closed, its last issue was released on April 11, 2018. In 2019, the publication is relaunched once again, and again in a new form.
