index.hu, the largest news portal in Hungary, was founded on the basis of another popular news website in 1990, INteRNeTTo. The project was born literally out of nothing: its owner had no office or staff, news was collected from the radio and manually entered on the website. The main page hosted a forum where you could discuss current events.
In the mid-1990s, a group of journalists managed to find investors to turn the formerly popular website into Hungary's leading electronic media outlet. In 1998, the new website reached a record 8,000 unique visitors per day. In the 2000s, the newspaper had its own office and permanent staff, and modern equipment was purchased for its work. Website traffic increased up to 25,000 visitors. As the number of readers increased, the number of employees of the editorial office of index. hu also increased: in early April, another 250 square meters of office space were leased. The main revenue of the publication was received from advertising, online marketing and providing services of complex business solutions, creating web pages. In 2003, the site was visited daily by 200,000 people.
The publication's revenue for 6 months of 2005 was almost 1 billion rubles. HUF, 25% of which was received from ad placement. The website is owned by a private company in the form of limited liability ownership (Index.hu Zrt.). The shares are owned by the Hungarian Development Fund (MFA).
Today, the content of the website is updated from many different sources, for which it is regularly criticized by readers due to the unsatisfactory quality of articles. Nevertheless, the editorial board even awards the VOLTfolio Cultural Media Award to individual representatives of culture and art.
