Le Progrès was first published on December 12, 1859 as the «independent newspaper of the Republican opposition», during the Third Republic it supported the party of Radical Socialists and its leader, Eduardo Herriot, and was the main competitor of Le Nouvelliste (another popular Lyon newspaper). During the Second World War, the newspaper was not published and returned to print on September 8, 1944. Shortly after returning to the French press market, it merged with another newspaper, L'Echo-Liberté (L'Echo du Sud-Est). This increased the circulation of the newspaper almost 2 times, if in the 1940s it was 150 thousand copies, then in the 1950s-already 391 thousand. In 1966, the editorial offices of Le Progrès and «
Le Dauphiné libéré» signed a merger agreement; until 2004, they were published by a common editorial board, but with different content. Then they changed the owner several times, today the publications are owned by Groupe EBRA.
