«L'Équipe» is a daily French national newspaper dedicated to sports. Published in French since 1946. On the pages of the newspaper «Equip» in daily reports you can find reviews of all popular sports in France and Europe: football, rugby, tennis, athletics, biathlon, auto and motorcycle racing and, of course, cycling. Depending on the season, more or less attention is paid to a particular sport. The electronic version of the newspaper is more voluminous in content, with separate pages dedicated to each sport, significant event, and famous athlete. Every Friday, in addition to the newspaper, a magazine of the same name is published (le magazine L'Equipe).
The history of the newspaper «L'equip» is directly related to another sports publication «L'Auto», which was popular in France in the early 1900s. The magazine was dedicated to auto racing and later to cycling in a separate edition («L'velo»). «L'Auto» was the organizer of the famous French cycling race «Tour da France», which takes place annually on the roads of France in July. This sporting event was supposed to increase sales of the newspaper, that is, to be a way to advertise the publication. It is interesting that the yellow jersey of the leader, which is worn by the winner of this race, did not appear by chance. Initially, the magazine was published on yellow paper. It is believed that the yellow T-shirt «Tour de France» was invented as a marketing ploy: Yellow T-shirt — yellow pages of the newspaper. In this way, something like a newspaper brand and advertisement was created for the fan-viewer and potential subscriber.
In 1940, Jacques Goddet, the son of the finance director of L'Auto, director of the Tour de France and a journalist, joined the management of the newspaper. Due to financial disagreements within the company, he decided to create a separate publication, which was called «Equip» (which means «The Team» in translation). The new magazine was dedicated to French sports in general, now it was not limited to auto-moto-bike topics. Since the company's previous mistakes were taken into account, the new print edition quickly became the most popular sports columnist in France, but it was already printed on plain white paper.
The magazine «L'velo» is still published, but today it is published as part of «Equip» in the form of an supplement. At the height of the cycling season, from May to September, the magazine becomes quite voluminous in content and is published separately. Since 1968, the editorial board also publishes a separate bicycle magazine «
Vélo Magazine» every week. Other editorial journals: Sport et Style, Journal du Nautisme, Journal du Runner, France Football, Journal du Golf.
