«Iltalehti» was founded in 1980 as an evening supplement to the newspaper «Uusi Suomi» (The New Finland). This practice of creating supplements to newspapers is typical for the Finnish press, when the main edition is published in the morning, and in the evening — an additional and irregular one dedicated to any significant events: political, economic, historical, cultural, and sporting events. In 1991, the newspaper «Uusi Suomi» ceased to exist due to financial problems, and «Iltalehti» continued to be published as an independent publication. It was transformed into a tabloid popular today, a representative of the «yellow» press. The newspaper publishes daily a selection of the most interesting news from the daily life of the country (politics, finance, society, culture and history, incidents, lifestyle, sports, entertainment, show business, photo reports, science and technology). The style of presentation is close to the tabloid press, but more restrained. The main competitor of the newspaper has always been the same tabloid «
Ilta Sanomat», today their editorial offices work together.
The concept of «Iltalehti» is similar to free newspapers: brief information, useful tips, advertising. Content of the electronic version: Uutiset (news), Urheilu (sports), Viihde (leisure, music, cinema, theater), Raha (finance), Terveys (health, medicine), Hyvä olo (guide to healthy living: nutrition, sports, spirituality), Asuminen (everyday life, design, interior, renovation, DIY, gadgets, shopping), Perhe (family), Matkailu (travel). Topics change depending on the day of the week. On weekends, an expanded version of the newspaper «Viikonvaihteen Iltalehti» is published (TV program, crosswords, additional voluminous topics).
