The newspaper's history dates back to 1885, when the regional print publication «Lappeenrannan Uutiset» was founded. In 1899, it merged with «Itä-Suomen Sanomat» (The News of Eastern Finland). The newspaper became an important source of information for the local Young Finnish Party. The newspaper was discontinued in December 1914 and replaced by a new political newspaper, «Etelä-Saimaa». After the Second World War, the publication changed its owner, the newspaper began to represent the interests of the province and agriculture. Since 1954, South Saimaa has been published daily and gradually lost its political focus, becoming more and more independent. Today it is published by Kaakon Viestintä Oy, which also publishes the newspaper «Kymen Sanomat». Their content partially copies each other.
