In 1857, Estonian social activist Johann Voldemar Jannsen founded the social, cultural and literary weekly «Perno Postimees ehk Näddalileht» (The Pärnu Postman or Weekly) in the town of Pärnu. The new publication has become a representative of the interests of ordinary Estonian people in all their classes: from the peasantry to the intelligentsia. In 1863, due to the popularity of the newspaper, the name was changed to «Eesti Postimees» (The Estonian Postman).

In 1886, a new newspaper «Postimees» was created on the basis of the publication, which became a daily newspaper in 1891. From May 1, 1948 until 1990, the newspaper was published under the title «Edasi» (The Forward), and was a characteristic censor information source of the Tartu City Committee of the Communist Party of Estonia.

On September 26, 1987, an important historical project on the economic independence of the Estonian SSR was published in the newspaper. It was later used as the basis for the official program of economic independence known as «Isemajandav Eesti» or «IME».

In 1990, the publication regained its historical name «Postimees». In 2005, in addition to the Estonian edition, a Russian-language version of the newspaper was published. Basically, it copied the Estonian edition with additional author's inserts. In 2016, the printed Russian-language version of «Postimees» was discontinued; this version of the publication remains only as a section on the official website of the newspaper, along with the English version.

The main circulation of the newspaper is distributed to regular subscribers and only 3 percent go on sale. The newspaper is popular throughout the Baltic region and is published in more than 30 different regional versions.
