Ecuador's oldest functioning newspaper, it was founded on February 16, 1884 by journalist Juan Miro, who came from Europe and decided to create a new independent newspaper in the country, where everyone could freely express their opinion. The newspaper is called «Telegraph» in English. It was named after the real telegraph line opened in Ecuador in the same year, which established a connection with Europe. The newspaper used this line for many years, receiving current news from all over the world and then printing it on its pages. At the end of the 19th century, it was bought by the Castillo family and had a long period of success. The newspaper went through many difficult periods together with Ecuador, in the 1920s it was under pressure and its activities were limited by the censorship in force in the country, and from the 1940s it was again in the lead. In 2008, the newspaper became state property. Today it is published by the media company Empresa Pública Medios.
The newspaper is a member of several local and international associations: the Ecuadorian Editors ' Association (de la Asociación Ecuatoriana de Editores de Periódicos (AEDEP)), the American Press Association (de la Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa), and the World Press Association (Asociación Mundial de Periódicos (WAN)). Newspaper has received several awards.
