«The Tico Times» was founded in 1956 in San Jose as the student newspaper of the largest Costa Rican private school «Lincoln School». The newspaper was a place where young and still inexperienced journalists of the country published, offering their ideas on how to make Costa Rica a better and more attractive place to live. All articles of the publication were devoted mainly to the culture, environment, history, traditions, tourism of Costa Rica and Central America in general. The publication flourished in the mid-2000s, when advertising was even placed on its pages. In 2012, the print version of the publication became unprofitable and was suspended. The name of the newspaper uses the word «Tico», as the inhabitants of Costa Rica historically call themselves, it came from the suffix used here, which is added to words to determine the masculine (tico) or feminine (tica) gender.
In 2017, «The Tico Times» returned to publishing in a new modern format, today its printed volume is approximately 15 pages, and it is intended primarily for tourists. The newspaper continues the best traditions of the previous edition, aimed at supporting young journalists. Its innovative distribution method is based on promotion through non-profit organizations, volunteers and freelancers. The newspaper can be found in many places around the country: hotels, restaurants, tourist centers, attractions.
The newspaper has been awarded several times for its work: the Pedro G. Beltrán Award from the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) for Outstanding Service to the Community (1981); Maria Moors Cabot Prizes from Columbia University (1985); the National Conservation Prize (1990); the IAPA Grand Prize for Press Freedom (1995); the Salvation Army's Others Award for supporting the Angel Tree program (1998); National Tourism Chamber Media Award (1998).
