«The London Free Press» is a regional daily newspaper in the Canadian city of London, Ontario. Do not confuse this London with the British one, although there are even similarities in the name of the river on which it stands — Canadian is located in the southwestern part of the province of Ontario on the River Thames. The first edition of this newspaper took place on January 2, 1849 under the title «Canadian Free Press», the newspaper was founded 4 years after a major fire that destroyed most of the city. In 1852, it was bought out by the Blackburn family of Canadian journalists, and after a change of ownership, the newspaper was renamed «The London Free Press and Daily Western Advertiser». London developed rapidly — already in 1855, it received the right to be called «the city», the newspaper noted this event in its own way, switching to a daily circulation.
From the 1860s to 1936, the main competitor was the evening «London Advertiser». «The Free Press» has always been published as a morning newspaper, but to compete, it has also produced periodic evening issues. In the post-war period, this tradition was continued: from 1950 to 1980, the newspaper published morning and evening editions. The Blackburns owned the paper until 1997, when it was taken over by «Sun Media Corporation», which added a separate Sunday edition to the daily. In 2015, Sun Media became part of the largest media company to date, «Postmedia».
The name of the newspaper can be translated as «London Free Press», the word «free» in its name means «open, independent, liberal». The content of the newspaper is traditional for most representatives of the regional press: important city news and events, news of the province of Ontario, a brief overview of Canadian national and international events, business and economic news, market reviews, various forecasts and analytics, sports, event posters, and other information.
