«Edmonton Journal» or simply «The Journal» — is a regional newspaper of the Canadian city of Edmonton in the province of Alberta, published since 1903. The literal translation of the newspaper's name means «Edmonton Magazine» or «Edmonton Newspaper». It was intended as a major competitor to Emonton's first liberal daily newspaper, «The Edmonton Bulletin», as well as another publication, «The Edmonton Post». The editorial policy of the new edition was closely associated with the Canadian Conservative Party, the newspaper was a political publication and represented its protectionist and imperialist programs in the region. The newspaper's popularity grew rapidly and it soon became a leader in the city. In 1912, on a wave of popularity, it was sold to the Southam family and was managed by them until 1996, when Hollinger International became the new owner of the newspaper. After 4 years, the newspaper was transferred to Canwest, and in the 2000s-to Postmedia Network Inc.
In 1938, the newspaper's editorial staff won the Pulitzer Prize for their contribution to the development of press freedom in the region. A year earlier, the newspaper had a conflict with the Alberta provincial government, which unsuccessfully tried to impose censorship restrictions on the newspaper. From 1951 to 1978, «The Edmonton Journal» was the only newspaper in the city of Edmonton after «The Edmonton Bulletin» closed, and its monopoly was broken after the appearance of «The Edmonton Sun». Today, the newspaper is published 6 days a week, its main sections include: News (news from Edmonton, Alberta and Canada, a brief overview of international events) Sports (national and international sports, hockey, basketball, tennis, curling, NHL, FC Edmonton, Edmonton Oil Kings), Opinion (discussion and analysis section on current topics of the day and week, meetings, interviews), Business (business section for business representatives and entrepreneurs, overview of the economic situation, market conditions, forecasts, statistics), Arts (exhibitions, movies, TV, show business, events), Life (educational magazine, society, entertainment, food, travel, fashion, health, family relations). The editorial staff actively participates in the life of the city, cooperates with various organizations and foundations.
