The newspaper was founded in 1929 by the popular Belgian publication «
De Standaard» in order to reach a wider audience. Initially, «Het Nieuwsblad» positioned itself in the daily market as a «newspaper for the Catholic minority» and representatives of the working class, and focused on sports topics. Compared to «De Standaard», new edition was more conservative and populist, more «simple» and understandable to most readers, with less politics and analysis, and more «popular» news. Beginning in the 1950s, the editors of Het Nieuwsblad began to buy up local, mostly low-budget and small-circulation publications, and attach them to the newspaper: «SportWereld», «De Standaardgroep», «Het Handelsblad», «Het Nieuws van den Dag», «Het Vrije Volksblad», «Het Volk».
The modern «Het Nieuwsblad» is a newspaper with sensational and exclusive news, investigative journalism, facts, incident analysis, in a word — a popular Belgian tabloid. Translated into English, its name means «News Sheet» or «Bulletin of News». The newspaper has a lot of photos and headlines that attract attention, and the information is given briefly and catchily (incidents, politics, economy, international events, society, capital news, sports, show business). Every day on its pages you can find comics and cartoons of a local artist known under the pseudonym «Marec». The newspaper is known for its detailed reviews of films and TV shows, books, and cultural events. The sports section «SportWereld» is still one of the biggest in the newspaper and pays a lot of attention to cycling. The publication traditionally supports various sporting events in Belgium, it is a long-standing informational sponsor of the annual spring classic one-day cycling race «Tour of Flanders», as well as «Omlop Het Nieuwsblad», and some other less significant ones.
