«Grenz-Echo» or «GrenzEcho» is today the only Belgian newspaper in German, published in the city of Eupen since 1927, the capital of the German-speaking community of Belgium. The newspaper's name means «Border Echo» or «Echo of Border Territories» in translation. It is distributed mainly in the municipality of the same name in the province of Liege, located on the border with Germany. The newspaper was banned in 1933 and returned to publication after the war.

A few facts from its history. After Germany's defeat in World War I, part of its territory, called Eupen-Malmedy or the Eastern Cantons (Eastern Belgium), was ceded to Belgium. On June 4, 1927, Pierre van Verweke and Henri Michel of Eupen founded a weekly newspaper that was to become a bulletin of the economic interests of the territories of the so-called Neo-Belge (Eupen-Malmedy) region. From 1929 to 1985, «Grenz-Echo» was owned by Verviers' Action Catholique, and it was during this period that the publication became the newspaper of the German-speaking diaspora in Belgium, which it still is today.
