Austria's largest regional newspaper by circulation, headquartered in Graz. It is distributed in the following regions: Graz, Styria, Carinthia and East Tyrol. «Kleine Zeitung» means «Small Newspaper» in German.
The publication was founded in 1904 by the «Association of Catholic Press in the Diocese of Graz-Seckau». The idea of Novaya gazeta was to create a newsletter accessible to ordinary readers, independent of the political line: a compact form of publication, a concise style of presenting information, and an affordable price of the publication. In addition, the emphasis was placed on the regional significance of news.
By 1934, the circulation had doubled to 60,000 copies, and the Kleine Zeitung became the most widely read newspaper in the Alpine region. During the war period, the newspaper continued to be published until 1945. The post-war Kleine Zeitung, which returned to publication in 1948, relies heavily on democratic values.
In May 1995, the daily newspaper was published on the Internet with an electronic version available to readers from other countries of the world. For paid subscribers, the «Kleine Zeitung Plus» section with exclusive information is available.
Kleine Zeitung has been an independent company since 1999. Since February 1, 2003, the Kleine Zeitung has been printed in color. Since January 2011, the newspaper has been published in separate versions for Styria and Carinthia. In 2012, the publishing house founded the «Kleine Zeitung Academy» with a wide range of seminars, events and lectures for journalists. In 2005, the newspaper established the Steirer helfen Steirern and Carinthians in Need foundations to raise donations to socially vulnerable Austrians. The newspaper is one of the co-authors of the Austrian Press Agency.
