Der Standard was founded in 1988 as a financial publication. After the change of management in 1995, its subject matter changed, the newspaper became more focused on socio-cultural issues of the Austrian region. In the 1990s, the Standard gradually became a national newspaper, while continuing to be a regional publication of the city of Vienna. The newspaper also has editorial offices in the provinces of Styria, Upper Austria and Carinthia.
Since 1995, the Austrian newspaper Standard has been available electronically on its official website. Der Standard is one of the first Austrian newspapers to be published online. Initially, the electronic and printed versions of the newspaper's publications were separate publications; the modern electronic «Der Standard» largely copies the printed version.
Since 2013, the newspaper has been available in an abbreviated compact form «Der-Standard-Kompakt». The newspaper is a member of the Austrian Press Agency and Project Syndicate, and adheres to the code of honor and dignity of the Austrian press. It is considered left-liberal. It belongs to the STANDARD Medien AG Foundation with its own publishing house and printing house.
Since 1998, the newspaper has been the organizer and sponsor of the annual audience award at the Vienna International Film Festival (Viennale).
Every Monday, the newspaper publishes a section in English with borrowings from
The New York Times. On Fridays, the newspaper publishes a supplement, the glossy entertainment magazine «Rondo»: fashion, style, travel, design, technology, food, music and cinema.
