«The Age» newspaper was founded in 1854 by three entrepreneurs who came to Australia from New Zealand. They were unable to succeed in managing the newspaper and after 2 years sold it to Swiss businessman Ebenezer Syme, who and his family owned the publication until the mid-1960s. During this period, «The Age» turned into a liberal political publication, advocating the absence of any restrictions in all spheres of life: commerce, the press, religion. Such prominent political figures as Graham Berry and George Turner were published here. In the 1970s, the newspaper was run by the Fairfax media agency, during which time it supported the Australian Labor Party and the Liberal-National Coalition, the subject of its publications was expanded, it appeared: author's columns of editors, cartoons, interviews.
From its inception to the present day, the newspaper remains a significant political tool of the State of Victoria. The title of the publication can be translated as «Century».
