«Perú.21» was conceived in 2001 by the editors of the main national political and economic newspaper of Peru, «
El Comercio», in order to compete with the then popular «
Correo». The new edition focused mainly on the current young generation of Peru and focused on politics, social news, entertainment and sports. The information was presented vividly and interestingly, some of the materials were sensational in nature. In 2008, special versions of this newspaper were released for the northern and southern regions of the country. The newspaper is known for its provocative cartoons and critical articles about government actions. The political line of the newspaper is close to the centrist one. Its name in English means «Peru 21» (meaning «XXI century»).
Today it has separate sections for Venezuela and city news of the country's capital, Lima, reviews of cultural events, discussion club, sports section: Actualidad (latest news), Opinión (discussions), Política (politics), Economía (economy), Mundo (international news), Entrevista (interviews, meetings), Ciudad (City Bulletin of Lima), Perú (national news, tourist guide), Vida21 (trends of the 21st century), Amenidades (announcements), Gadgets.21 (gadgets, technologies), Deportes (sports).
